It starts with Zero...

"Time has been your greatest ally, but now it has deserted you..."

All great things start somewhere. But where was the beginning to start with? I'm sure that's a question we all asked at some point. But what am I even referring to in the first place? To properly understand this story let me take you back. Back to 2011 specifically.

Its 2011, a time much different than now... well perhaps not too different, but personally, it seems like ages ago. Things have changed so much since then. I'm now happily married, have a daughter and trying to further a career, but this story isn't of my life it's about something entirely different. But shall we get back to point?

The year is 2011. Sophomore year of highscool. At the time people were all caught up in political nonsense and who  they were going to vote for president. For us "kids" at the time, we only cared about video games and food... and maybe some exercise. Stirring up in this video game industry was a game that recently emerged in 2009 as a PC title. At first it was immensely popular with kids in elementary school. My reaction to this title was to be expected I guess. I thought it was stupid and like others I made fun of it at first. Well jump forward a few years to 2013 and my wife who was my girlfriend at the time begged me to purchase this same title for her as it had just released on the Xbox 360 and her group of xbox live buddies were all playing it. I gave in. She loved it which eventually gave me a curiosity in which I tried it out for the first time. Being a huge Halo fan I had standards, and this? This was almost comical to play. The animations, the graphics. "Why is this garbage so popular" I said. Well after a few days I understood...

The creativity, the urgent survival, the open world influencing that itch for exploration, all the unusual blocky-beauty of this simulated world. Eat or starve. Fight or be killed. It finally hit me. I actually understood. Deep down this wasn't just a kids game. It was a game of nightmares, wonder, creativity... and passion, all bundled up behind the veil of bad graphics that you'd swear was inspired from a retro 80's game. This game opened up my mind to so many questions. Why were you just starting off in the open world to fend for yourself? What were all these things that were trying to attack you? What was the purpose behind all these places you went and the things you fought? There has to be a back story to this. But there isn't... or was'nt one from what I could find. And this is where the true story begins.

I embarked on this journey over 5 years ago. I wanted to explain why this and that were happening in the game instead of them just being there and you just aimlessly doing all these things without any actual reason. What am I talking about you ask?
                 An origin story!

That's right, you read that correctly. 18 year old me decided to take on this task behind the scenes. Code named "Zero" to represent that this takes place before the game. Not during, not after. And most certainly not based off of the side game or games that have released since then. This is the story that set the events of the main game in motion. After many years of planning and designing I've decided to share some details after being hesitant to do so in fear of copy cats stealing my ideas. With that being said, going into this project I already knew the art direction I'd be going in. Let me explain below...

Things remembered...

The story is based in the world we know and love but most of the time will not have the traditional blocky look that we are used to. Its a brave move but let me explain that this does not mean within my story that the traditional look does not exist. There is a solid reason for why I wanted to express this vivid change into my story and the most simple answer is because this story does not focus on the player but the NPC- 'Non Playable Character'.  The world appears more "smooth" because this is the story through their eyes, not the players or ours. In short it's how they perceive the world they exist in. Infact, none of the characters are aware that they are part of a simulated world and they live their lives just as we live ours in the "real" world.

Enemy lines.

Zero will introduce a lot of new enemies but specifically, the forces of the End will be the main threat in this story. You will see more enemies than ever before with more than 40 new enemies being added to the universe, with 11 of them being new inhabitants of the End. Theres a lot to worry about with numbers like that.

Advancing advances.

Zero will take the series in many unexpected directions, one of them being new advances in technology! Well technically old advances. Diamond armor and weapons? Pshhh! That's boring! Ever wonder what obsidian armor would look like? Leave that sword behind and take up a gunlance! Also, what's pumpkin soul armor? Zero's black smith's have dabbled in new ways to construct their gear and let me say it's pretty flippin' noice.

Dark past, ancient evil

As stated before, the main threat in this story will be the creatures that inhabit the End. In the main game we only saw two main threats arise from the space-like dimension. Endermen and the Ender dragon. This time around we will see atleast 11 different species that originate from the End. Some of which will make it their goal to corrupt life on the Overworld and even the Nether. Yes I said Corrupt. Once a life form is corrupted, it will mutate into a hollow version of its original self and will be used to infect more life forms further more. Behind this is an ancient being that created the End, and it will stop at nothing until it consumes all life.

As for the story itself, it is in the beginning stages but I am at a point where I basically know the flow of how things will take place and how they end. "Great things from small beginnings".

If you have stumbled upon this post and read this far, I want to thank you for taking time out of your busy day to acknowledge my little blog. And if you dont mind taking the time to leave feedback on how you feel about these things, it would be greatly appreciated!

Well, thats about all for this week. I will share more details in the near future. For now, thanks for stopping by. Always chase your dreams! Peace out.
